This course explores how databases are designed, implemented, used and maintained, with an emphasis on industrial and commercial applications. We focus on the relational database model and learn the mathematics of structured queries. Students will gain experience with a commercial database management system and will work in teams with local companies on a Design Project (DP) . Since the World Wide Web (WWW) is essentially a huge distributed multimedia database, we'll also learn how to design HTML pages, how to search and collect data on the web, and how the WWW is being used by industry. ``Student teams from two IEOR database design courses recently placed their semester projects up for review before local technical gurus. Two juries of engineering professors and industry representatives rated the Web-based projects on the basis of creativity, database design, technical sophistication, functional richness, and user interface design.'' -- Tamar Laddy, UCB Engineering News, 1996. |
Registration and Wait List for IEOR 115
Due to the size of our laboratory, the class is limited to 40 students. Priority is given to IEOR seniors. If you are an IEOR senior, see Francisca Cazares in 4135 Etcheverry hall to get a class entry code. If you are NOT an IEOR Senior, and want to register, visit Francisca and ask to be put on the YELLOW PAD Wait List. This is not the same as the Tele-bears wait list. It is a hardcopy list that includes your name, major, expected graduation date, and email address. After the first week of classes we will give out the remaining class entry codes according to the priorities above and position on the waiting list. If you have further questions about registration, please ask Francisca at francisca@ieor.berkeley.edu.
