2 Mon Individual Assignment 2: Sketch your cell phone. List 4 design improvements for the phone. Thoroughness and clarity of the sketch. Creativity of the improvements.
3 Mon Individual Assignment 3: Design a set of directions from the Berkeley BART station to this classroom WITHOUT text. Conciseness, effectiveness, creativity. No text.
4 Wed Individual Assignment 4: Create a paper prototype which describes the current process of withdrawing $20 from an ATM machine.

List 4 ideas for improvement. Think about ordering particular bills, individualized conversation, suggestions about your checking/savings balance and many more.
Thoroughness and clarity of the prototype. Creativity of improvement suggestions.
4 Wed Team Berkeley Innovation Group Exercise:

To be done in project teams:
- Observations and testimonials from people using takeout boxes
- Come up with 5 personas within your group
- Bring all evidence of needs finding (photographs, interviews) to class to discuss on Wednesday
- You will not need to turn any of this in but it will be VERY helpful when it comes to prototyping!
Nothing to turn in, but will be discussed in class.
7 Wed Individual Assignment 5: Design a one page poster advertising IEOR 170 (we'll use the best one next year!). It should relate in some way to the design of David Goines, and must use no more than two hues (you can use as many saturations and values of these as you'd like). Turn in a one page printout, if you don't have access to a color printer, also include the URL where we can view it online if possible. Creativity. Effectiveness of communication. Incorporation of David Goines style elements. Color arrangement.
8 Mon Team Report I (2 pages maximum )
Project Definition, Constraints, and Goals (Think broadly in terms of user experience: don't just repeat the assignment, define the assignment!)
Assessment of status quo and competition (solutions to similar challenges)
Description of 3-5 Personas (representing user types/categories)
10 best brainstorming ideas: Rank in order (worst to best), describe briefly, and summarize pros and cons.
Team Member Responsibilities and team design project schedule.
12 Wed Team Report II (5 pages maximum )
Summary of problem, constraints, your research on competition
Top 3 Design Concepts: Conservative, Intermediate, Radical
Description of each, pros, cons, evaluation
Initial feedback on each concept from potential users.
Planned User Survey: Questions and Plan for collecting data
Updated team design project schedule.
13 Mon Team Report III (nothing to turn in: team discussion with professor)
Feedback and discussion based on written Report II.
13 Wed Individual Assignment 6: You have been hired by a museum to design an interactive educational exhibit to teach children ages 10-16 about the ear and auditory perception. Design an exhibit that conveys one of these points:

1. Sound and waves
2. Frequency and pitch
3. The decibel scale

Illustrate with diagrams and explain how your exhibit will effectively convey the ideas. Please limit to 3 pages.
Understanding of chosen sound characteristic. Creativity. Clarity of design.
16 Mon Team Report IV (powerpoint presentation: 9 minutes)
